Oh my darling
My four year old is named Clementine. I’ve always liked the name and right after she was born we had on the Elliot Smith song ‘CLEMENTINE’ and that kinda made it a lock.
Anyway, soon enough we wanted to sing her ‘Oh My Darling’ but that song is about a little girl that drowns in a river. I thought singing her that song would be a little morbid so I kinda re-wrote it.

That’s as far as I ever got with it and it was kinda just made up on the spot. One day she’ll be horrified by the real version and I’ll have a lot of explaining to do. But that day is a long way off.
Very cool, man. My daughter was actually born last week. We named her Adeline. I haven’t told my girlfriend, but the Elliot Smith song, “Sweet Adeline” locked it in for me.

I have found that some songs we sing to our children as infants to be quite morbid.

My daughter’s middle name is Bernadette after the song by the Four Tops.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t after hearing it on the radio, but because there was a film with Kirsty Alley in it, that song was in there and they kept showing that film time and time again on cable! LOL

I named my first born Anabelle Lee. Even though it is Poe’s greatest metaphysical poem she didn’t dwell on the backstory, but the appreciation of a good name. Kids will go through a variations of names, nicknames and such but remain the same person they become in the early years.
Knowing they can have someone to go to when they are hurt, hungry or scared is more important than a name. The name never becomes an issue until they start to socialize and it becomes their identity beyond Mommy and Daddy.
A common name is just that and rarely gets you any attention unless you put a cat on your head at a party. Then your just “Joe, who had the cat on his head at the party”.
A uncommon name with character will make you easily recognizable when they call you. Not for a shy child but perfect for the mischievous or audible child.
She will appreciate the name one day because it was a name that came through a generous amount of thought and love..

I thought you did a great job on that! I was thinking the same thing about Rock-A-Bye-Baby when I was singing it to my younger son, I have two boys, and changed the words to it as well. Not by much, but just enough that baby doesn’t fall cradle and all.. Mama catches him cradle and all… Guess I can pretend to be super woman for a song! haha Great job, beautiful little girl. Its great to see a Daddy love his little one so much!
